Bandon, also referred to as “Bandon-by-the-Sea”, is in the county seat of Coos County, Oregon. It is on the south side of the mouth of the Coquille River where it meets the Pacific Ocean. Bandon holds heritage in the Coquille Indians, gourmet cheese making, the world premier Bandon Dunes Golf course, and wet harvested cranberries.
In 1852 an Irishman was shipwrecked on the Coos Bay bar and walked into the Bandon area. Permanent settlers arrived in 1853 and soon after that the post office was established. Cheese making started in 1880 followed by the sawmill and a one room school house. In 1884 construction on the jetty began.
The 2010 census population was 3,066 people and 1,466 households in Bandon. The median age of the population was 53.4 years with 46.35% males and 53.65% females.
Bandon hosts the Cranberry Festival every year in September where residents and visitors experience the cranberry eating contest, cranberry hop, live music from rock ‘n roll to classics, and other fun-filled weekend activities. The Boardwalk is a historic stop in Bandon where visitors experience the Port of Bandon. The freshest seafood, deep sea fishing charters, and crabbing off Weber’s Pier can all be found on the pier. Guests enjoy the relaxing, beautiful panoramic view of the Coquille River and shop historic Old Town.
Bandon is home to three schools with a total of approximately 730 students; Ocean Crest Elementary School, Harbor Lights Middle School, and Bandon High School.
